This week several members of the Orthomolecular Medicine News Service (OMNS) were asked, “How would you treat the coronavirus?” Here are opinions of experts who study the potential of nutrients to fight disease.
Dr. Andrew W. Saul, an international expert on vitamin therapy, says, “The coronavirus can be dramatically slowed or stopped completely with the immediate widespread use of high doses of vitamin C. Bowel tolerance levels of C taken in divided doses throughout the day, is a clinically proven antiviral, without equal.”
Saul adds, “Dr. Robert F. Cathcart, who had extensive experience treating viral diseases remarked, ’I have not seen any flu yet that was not cured or markedly ameliorated by massive doses of vitamin.”
Professor Victor Marcial-Vega of the Caribe School of Medicine responds, “Given the relatively high rate of success of intravenous vitamin C in viral diseases and my observation of clinical improvement within 2 to 3 hours of treatment, I strongly believe it would be my first recommendation in the management of the coronavirus.”
He adds, “I have also used intravenous vitamin C to treat patients with influenza, dengue fever, and chikungunya, for 24 years.”
Dr. Jeffery Allyn Ruterbusch, Associate Professor at Central Michigan University, says, “I believe all of us agree on the greatly increased benefits of vitamin C when people are placed under any stressful condition.”
Dr. Damien Downing, former editor of the Journal of Nutritional and and Environmental Medicine, writes: “Swine flu, bird flu, and SARS, all developed in selenium-deficient China. When patients were given selenium, viral mutation rates dropped and immunity improved.”
Several other authorities agreed that high doses of vitamin C, along with 3,000 IU of vitamin D, and 20 milligrams of zinc, was a good combination to help fight viral diseases. And Drs. Carolyn Dean and Thomas Levy, both world authorities on magnesium, stressed that the mineral is involved in 1,000 metabolic reactions and that maintaining adequate levels improves immunity. Another over-riding opinion was that few people know that high doses of C increase immunity and destroy viral diseases.
This information is not new. During the great polio epidemic of 1949-50 Dr. Frederick R. Klenner, a family physician in North Carolina, treated 60 polio patients with high doses of intravenous vitamin C. None developed paralysis. This discovery should have made headlines around the world but Dr. Klenner’s news fell on deaf ears.
Later, Klenner proved that high doses of C could also be effective as treatments for meningitis, pneumonia, measles, hepatitis and other viral and bacterial diseases. Even the bite of a rattlesnake. Again, only scorn from the medical profession.
What does this mean to North Americans? Patients with a diagnosis of coronavirus should be given intravenous vitamin C, and it will save lives. The problem is that most doctors still refuse to believe IVC is effective. (Note: Load up on ‘Electric C’ – then intravenous C will not be necessary.)
Vitamin C pills will do but is only ascorbic acid and not readily absorbed and you must swallow many of them. Start taking 2000 mg twice a day to build up immunity. If flu symptoms develop, take 2,000 mg every hour up to bowel tolerance, and see a doctor. Large doses of C cause loose stools. But better to sit on a toilet than under a gravestone.

A coronavirus pandemic can be stopped with the immediate
widespread use of high doses of vitamin C
There has been a lack of media coverage of this effective and successful approach against viruses in general, and coronavirus in particular. Preventing and treating severe respiratory infections with large amounts of vitamin C is well established. (Also, here is the Chinese language edition).
Results are all that matter to me.
Alternative medicine works. The natural treatment of illness can be accomplished safely, inexpensively, and effectively. We’ve all been taught that anything that is safe and inexpensive cannot possibly be really effective against “real diseases.” It is time to rethink that, and especially to see for yourself what works.
I am an educator, not a physician. My work is not prescription, but rather description. I’d like for us to be free to utilize any reasonable health care approach. To decide, we need education far more than medication.
Each treatment regimen included here is not mine. I do not stay up late at night making all this up. These ideas are not original. They are generally not new, either. I have collected the safest and most effective healing approaches that I can find from physicians worldwide. I hope you find them to be as helpful as they have been for my family.
Natural healing is not about avoiding doctors. It is about not needing to go to doctors.
A dentist is not upset if you are cavity-free. A doctor should not be upset if you are healthy.
The idea is to be well. The first step is wanting to be. The old Chinese saying is “When you are sick of sickness, you are no longer sick.”
The second step is to do something to improve your health. Each of us is ultimately responsible for our own wellness. I think we should leave no stone unturned in our search for better health. I also believe that you get out of your body what you put into it. Your body will respond to your efforts to improve your health.
The time to start is right now. Another old saying: “If not now, when? If not here, where? If not you, then who?”

Preventing is obviously easier than treating severe illness. Immediate use of half-hourly 2,000 mg doses of Vitamin C, up to bowel tolerance, will usually stop a cold from escalating to influenza or influenza from escalating to pneumonia. But treat serious illness seriously: in the very young or the very old, influenza or pneumonia can kill. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention.
Here is a second opinion. Dr. Cathcart advocates treating influenza with up to 150,000 milligrams of vitamin C daily, often intravenously. You and I can, to some extent, simulate a 24 hour IV of vitamin C by taking it by mouth very, very often. When I had pneumonia, it took 2,000 mg of vitamin C every six minutes, by the clock, to get me to saturation. My oral daily dose was over 100,000 mg. Fever, cough and other symptoms were reduced in hours; complete recovery took just a few days. That is performance at least as good as any pharmaceutical will give, and the vitamin is both safer and cheaper.
Remember: treating respiratory infections with massive amounts of vitamin C is not a new idea at all. Frederick R. Klenner, M.D. and William J. McCormick, M.D. used this approach successfully for decades beginning back in the 1940’s. You will want to consult their works, which you can quickly find with a site search from the top of the main page at http://www.doctoryourself.com . All who think that, though vitamin C generally has merit, that massive doses are ineffective or somehow harmful will do well to read the original papers for themselves. Clinical evidence confirms the powerful antiviral-antibiotic effect of vitamin C when used in sufficient quantity.
Speaking as a parent, I can confirm that vitamin C works as well as antibiotics or antivirals since our children have never needed either, not even once. That is not because we did nothing; we used vitamin C instead.
Vitamin C can be used alone or right along with medicines if one so chooses. Prescription drugs are not doing the job. 75,000 Americans die from pneumonia and influenza each year. That is over 200 deaths every single day.
Aggressive, widespread use of vitamin C would dramatically lower that figure. There is no excuse for excluding it.

In the China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of 
Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University and Thomas M. Campbell II, a physician, examines the link between the consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancers, etc. The authors conclude that people who eat a predominantly whole-food, plant-based diet—avoiding animal products as a main source of nutrition, including beef, pork, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese and milk, and reducing their intake of processed foods and refined carbohydrates—will escape, reduce, or reverse the development of numerous diseases.
The study concluded that countries with a high consumption of animal-based foods were more likely to have higher illnesses and death rates from “Western” diseases, while the opposite was true for counties that ate more plant-based foods.
Our current model of health care has turned into a system of disease care, merely treating symptoms rather than addressing the underlying cause of disease. Addressing the cause of illness is the logical answer.
Taking a more holistic approach to health, there isn’t a part of our body that isn’t connected to another part of our body. With over a hundred trillion cells in our body, taking a more holistic or whole body approach to health is our best investment.
